Ami Mehta studied and practiced architecture and environmental design for more than twelve years before making the transition to full-time visual artist. Much like the architecture she is drawn to, her pieces originate from a dialogue between abstraction and substance, turbulence and tranquility, organic spontaneity within the deliberate constraints of rigorous structure. The quality of Ami’s mark-making is meditative and delicate, interspersed with bold, aggressive gestures--evoking nature’s balance on the brink of both order and chaos. Ami's distinctive color palette is heavily influenced by her Indian background and extensive world travels—ochre and olive green she absorbed while growing up off the coast of Saudi Arabia, the bright fuchsias and marigolds from her extended home in Mumbai, the deep emerald greens she experienced while trekking across Mongolia, the glistening ceruleans of the glaciers of Torres Del Paine. Ami lives outside of Houston, Texas with her husband and three children.
